Microsoft launched Windows 11 SE, its student-oriented operating system, in November following the rollout in October of Windows 11. Windows 11 SE was built with students and teachers in mind, and is designed to offer a simple, uncluttered environment for children according to Microsoft.

This isn't the first Microsoft operating system that is designed for students. Windows 10 S was the student-oriented version of Windows 10, but Microsoft said this version of Windows 10 only blocked certain applications from downloading similar to parental controls. Windows 11 SE, on the contrary, is an operating system that is focused more on remote management.

Many schools across the United States began remote learning after the pandemic. This was vital for many children in school to continue their education. Microsoft made Windows 11 SE with that in mind.

What is Windows 11 SE? Microsoft Windows 11 SE is a cloud first operating system designed for classrooms with a grade K-8. It has a simple design and controlled installation of applications. Since the software is geared towards classrooms you won't see it in stores. Instead, Windows 11 SE comes preloaded on selected Microsoft devices that Microsoft plans to sell to educational organizations.

Are you able to install Windows 11 SE on your laptop at home? Unfortunately, no. Windows SE cannot be installed on your home computer the same way that Windows 10 or Windows 11 could. You can, however, purchase a different version of Windows and install it on your Windows 11 SE-enabled laptop once it has been wiped by an IT administrator. However the device won't be able to revert to Windows 11 SE. So be cautious before taking this step.

What apps work with Windows 11 SE devices Microsoft Office, Teams, Minecraft for Education and OneNote all are preloaded on Windows 11 SE, and apps like Google Chrome and Zoom can be downloaded. Only administrators are able to download and manage other applications through Microsoft Intune for Education. Microsoft has made available this list of six kinds of apps that are available for download:

Content-filtering apps

Test-taking "solutions"

Accessibility applications

Effective classroom communication apps

Apps for essential diagnostics, management, connectivity, and supportability

Browsers

Messenger and Spotify apps did not make it. This means less distractions on Windows 11 SE devices. However, Microsoft said apps that work in a browser for the web will still work. Minecraft server list

You aren't able to change the operating system settings. Like the apps, only administrators are able to alter them. Administrators can also remotely wipe the device remotely.

How does Windows 11 compare to Windows 11 SE? Windows 11 SE and Windows 11 SE are different in the sense that Windows 11 was intended for personal use, whereas Windows 11 SE was created for remote management in IT or classroom settings. The different goals affect how users are able to access the operating system and which applications can be used. Windows 11 can be upgraded from Windows 10. Windows 11 has no restrictions on apps. Only administrators can add apps to Windows 11 SE. Even the administrators can only choose from a small number of apps. The operating systems function and appear identical to each other.
