Virtually all mobile devices can be unlocked to operate with any GSM mobile phone network provider, however phone might still show the original logos and may not support popular features of the new carrier. This firmware is installed by the service provider which is separate from the locking mechanism. The majority of mobile phones can be unbranded by re-flashing a different firmware variation, an operation suited to advanced users only.

Unlocking Technology:

Frequently, a locked phone will show a message if a restricted SIM is used, requesting the unlock code. On recent phone models running Android operating system software, the mobile phone should display a message stating “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it is network locked. Windows phones will display the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Some other devices could show differing messages along the lines of "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some cases the device will simply show a message saying that it is locked. When a valid code is typed in, the mobile phone handset displays "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.
